Bonviva is an oral preparation, which is used to treat osteoporosis condition. This medicine contains generic Ibandronate sodium, which is a type of bisphosphonate. It is also recommended for the treatment of metastasis-associated skeletal fractures in cancer patients and decreases hypocalcaemia (a condition in which calcium level gets enhanced). Generally, this drug is prescribed for the postmenopausal females, as they are more prone towards osteoporosis condition due to low level of estrogen. Osteoporosis conditions affects individual and it decrease the bone density.

How Bonviva acts?

Generic Ibandronate sodium works by partially activate affinity of hydroxyapatite, which is part of mineral matrix of bone. This drug blocks the action of enzymes i.e. farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP) synthase which is a main cause for the occurrence of osteoclasts. Due to the inhibition of osteoclasts formation the resorption of bone will decrease automatically, which is beneficial in osteoporosis condition.

What are the contraindications of Bonviva?

  • Individual who have gastrointestinal irritation should not take this drug.
  • Do not take this drug in case of poor renal and hepatic abilities.
  • This drug is not prescribed for the patients who have musculoskeletal pain.

What are drug-interactions of this drug?

Consult your healthcare providers, if you are taking, or have recently taken, any other medicines. that includes mainly, herbal preparations, NSAID;s and other prescription or non prescription  drugs.

Dose of Bonviva

  • Take this tablet once in a month.
  • Choose a day, which you can remember easily for further dosing.
  • You can choose the same day of every month, as it will be easy to remember the dose.
  • This drug should be taken after 6 hours of anything you had, either liquid or food.
  • Never take Bonviva two times in a same week, as it can seriously harm you.

Bonviva or generic Ibandronic acid is available in 150 mg tablet, so take it via mouth along with enough amount of water. Do not chew or crush the tablets, as they may produce bitter taste in your mouth.

How to store this medication?

Store the drug at room temperature away from the reach of children and pets. Protect the drug from direct sunlight heat and moisture.

What are the possible side effects of Bonviva?

Common side effects of this drug which are generally seen in one out of 20 peoples are-

  • pain or stiffness in your muscles, joints, or back
  • fever and feeling of discomfort, fatigue,
